Overview
The ScanGear allows you to scan documents from your computer.
System Requirements
For details on the operating environment, see "Readme_MD.hta."
Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
Make sure that you have adequate disk space available when scanning large documents at high resolutions. For instance, scanning a full page color document at 600 dpi requires a minimum of 300MB of free disk space.
Only run one application at a time that is actively linked to ScanGear. Do not open more than one application that is actively linked to ScanGear. Also, do not open ScanGear more than once to acquire an image in the same application.
When scanning large images at high resolutions, the progress bar may stop at 0% or your computer may stop responding, depending on the size of the file and the limitations of the applications being used. If this happens, cancel the action (for example by clicking the progress bar's cancel button), and then increase the virtual memory available and perform the scan again.
Selecting smaller area at lower resolutions may also resolve the problem. Also, you can scan the image from the MF Scan Utility and import the resulting file into your application.
The TWAIN data source may not open correctly from time to time when the system file is in the NTFS format. For security reasons, the TWAIN module cannot be written to the "winnt" directory. For details, contact your system administrator.
Always close the ScanGear main window before you exit the parent application program.
Certain personal computers (including laptops) may not restart correctly from standby mode when the printer is attached. If this occurs, please restart your computer.
You may not be able to use the [Start] key on the machine after you install the driver. In this case, restart your computer.
When you preview or scan an image with a relatively uniform background, the Auto Tone function may change its coloring. If this occurs, reset the Auto Tone.
Some applications may close ScanGear automatically after scanning.
Some application programs may hide the TWAIN user interface. In this case, refer to the application programmer's manual to find out the required setting changes to show the TWAIN user interface.
If you are using Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier, when scanning full page images into a Microsoft Office application (such as Word, PowerPoint or Excel), it is recommended that you use the Custom Insert command in the Insert Picture from Scanner or Camera dialog box. The image may otherwise not be scanned correctly.
Images imported from Corel WordPerfect 10 may not be imported correctly. If this happens, increase the virtual memory available and scan the image again. This should solve the problem.
Some applications supporting for PC Scanning might be unable to scan documents continuously by using the ADF. In this case, please scan documents by using the Platen Glass.
The following applications will not allow scanning of multi-page documents.
When using "Paint" on Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10
When scanning a document using these applications, please scan each page individually.
If multiple documents are placed in the feeder, the following problems occur. Place only one document in the feeder.
The second and subsequent sheets of document are not scanned.
After all the documents are scanned, <Canceled.> appears in the display.
The next scanning cannot be performed.
For Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10, when starting a driver from WIA 1.0 applications such as "Paint" to scan a document, the following operations cause an error.
(1) Selecting [Flatbed] from [Paper source]
(2) Clicking [Adjust the quality of the scanned picture]
(3) Setting [Resolution] to 600 dpi, then clicking [OK]
(4) Selecting [Document Feeder] from [Paper source]
(5) Clicking [Scan] or clicking [Adjust the quality of the scanned picture] to change the resolution
In this case, select a setting other than [Custom Settings] once, and then scan a document or change the resolution.
When connecting a computer to the printer by both USB and network, be sure to install the driver using either of the following methods.
If you have the User Software and Manuals CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM)
Install both the drivers for USB and network connections from the [Software Programs/Manuals Setup] screen.
If you downloaded the driver from the Canon website
Execute [Setup.exe] to install both the drivers for USB and network connections.
If you are using a USB connection, and finish installing the MF Scan Utility without connecting the device and computer with a USB cable, an application selection screen may be displayed when you scan from the device. In a case such as this, specifying an application according to the following procedure will stop the screen being displayed.
(1) Install the MF Scan Utility.
Proceed to Step (2) if the MF Scan Utility has been already installed on your computer, or if the MF Scan Utility is not compatible with your computer.
(2) Connect the device and computer with a USB cable → turn on the device.
(3) Log on to the computer with an administrator account.
(4) Select [View devices and printers] from [Control Panel].
If you are using Windows Vista, select [Hardware and Sound] from [Control Panel] → select [Scanners and Cameras].
(5) Right-click the icon for your device → click [Scan properties].
If you are using Windows Vista, right-click the icon for your device → click [Properties].
(6) Click the [Event] tab → select [Start this program] → select [MF Scan Utility].
If you have applications that are compatible with the device you are using, you can specify and use an application other than the MF Scan Utility.
